Items of Interest
Here are a few items you should note when visiting our area. As always, be sure to check or ask
to confirm the laws in each area of the state - We can't be responsible for any inaccuracies here since
laws have a habit of changing and varying from area-to-area; always inquire when in doubt.
- Legal drinking age - In most areas of Louisiana, the legal drinking age is 21 years of age; be prepared
to show your id to bars upon entrance or stores upon the purchase of alcoholic beverages.
- Alcohol on the street - In many areas of New Orleans proper, unlike other states, it is legal to
carry open containers of alcohol outside. You'll find many bars offering you a "go cup" upon leaving
an establishment with a drink - however glassware (open glass containers) is prohibited. Be sure to
ask in any case regarding the local laws.
- Daiquiris - You'll also find numerous frozen-Daiquiris shops (another local staple in the college community)
located throughout the city and even
some that offer "drive-thru-windows" - be advised that drinking and driving is taken very seriously
by law-enforcement authorities and in most areas, open containers of alcohol in vehicles is a definite
no-no. In the case of Daiquiris, if the cup has a straw inserted through the top or shows any other
signs of consumption, it is considered an open container of alcohol and therefore prohibited.
- Sources of alcohol - In most areas of Louisiana there are less restrictions on the purchase of
alcohol; in fact, in the New Orleans area you can purchase hard liquor in places such as gas station
convienence stores, even on Sunday.
